Grey's Anatomy star Camilla Luddington has shared her tinnitus diagnosis in an episode of her podcast with former co-star Jessica Capshaw.

Luddington, who plays Dr Josephine 'Jo' Wilson on ABC's long-running medical drama, explained how she realised she has the condition.

"I'm going to talk about something I haven't really talked about before, definitely have not talked about in detail," she said on the Call It What It Is podcast.

"Two-ish, three, maybe two-ish years ago I was watching Ghost Busters and there are a lot of silent parts in it and I turned to Matt and I said, 'Is, is the TV buzzing?' I was very confused and he was like 'No,' and I'm like, 'Do you hear that ringing in your ear?' and he was like 'No I don't,'" she continued.

"And, long story short, I realised I had something called tinnitus, which is — and I still have it to this day — which is a constant noise."

According to the NHS, it isn't clear what causes tinnitus but it has been linked to hearing loss, Ménière's disease, anxiety or depression.

Speaking about her experience, Luddington shared that she only has tinnitus in her right ear and that she also has some hearing loss. She also had to undergo an MRI scan as tinnitus can sometimes be present as a result of a tumour, but she found out she didn't have one.

"I have it right now, I can always hear it, and it was very distressing to me because I realised after a few days, 'Oh I still hear this constantly, I'm not sure if this is something that is going to go away,'" the actor said.

"I have to say that I was really devastated over it. I heard it very loudly, a lot, I found it very hard to parent. I was so self-conscious, I felt like I was going a little crazy and I ended up doing a hearing test and finding out I also had some hearing loss," Luddington explained, saying she's "sure" she'll need a hearing aid in the future.

"I'm going to rock that by the way, everyone," she joked.

Grey's Anatomy season 21 will air premiere on Thursday, September 26 at 10pm ET on ABC in the US. Previous seasons are streaming on Disney+ in the UK.
