Men’s top seed Jannik Sinner defeated Daniil Medvedev at Arthur Ashe Stadium just after the world No.1 Iga Swiatek lost to American hopeful Jessica Pegula in the US Open quarter-finals on Wednesday night.

Jannik Sinner will take another step towards a second Grand Slam of the year, with the Italian arriving in fine form having won the Australian Open and the Cincinnati Open.

Sinner played against 2021 champion Medvedev in their quarter-final, and despite anti-doping controversy and 5-7 losing record against the Russian, the Italian was favorite both to progress and to capture a second major title of his career.

The pair have ping-ponged back and forth each set. Sinner won the first set 6-2, Medvedev won the second 6-1, and Sinner came back swinging with a 6-1 victory in the third. The match nears three hours, with Sinner needing just two more games to advance to the semis.

Earlier in the night, 23-year-old Swiatek was bidding for a second Grand Slam title of 2024, having won the French Open in June, but was defeated by sixth seed home hopeful Pegula, who finally qualified for her first ever Grand Slam semi-final.

Pegula breaks Swiatek’s serve

Just over an hour into the match, the American is up 6-2, 4-3.

Swiatek had made a series of unforced errors when it appeared that Pegula was about to break the Polish player’s serve to take the lead.

But that’s not what happened. Swiatek pulled Pegula from one side of the court to the next, which Pegula responded with a lob. The world’s number one put away the lob with an overhead smash to the American’s backhand side.

After more long rallies, resulting in each player’s advantage, Pegula ended up breaking the tournament’s top seed.

Roger Federer says there are still questions to be answered over Jannik Sinner doping case

Wednesday 4 September 2024 23:30 , Chris Wilson

Roger Federer has questioned why Jannik Sinner was not provisionally suspended after the Italian world number one failed two drugs testsearlier in the year.

In March, Sinner twice tested positive for clostebol, an anabolic steroid. He claimed the steroid had entered his system through a massage from his physiotherapist, and was eventually cleared of any wrongdoing by an independent tribunal in August.

There were claims that Sinner was receiving preferential treatment, with fellow player Denis Shapovalov writing on social media that there were “different rules for different players”. More recently, Sinner admitted that he got a frosty reception in the locker room at the US Open.
