Fortnite update downtime, patch notes, Doom Quests, and Marvel super styles revealed

Fortnite is back online with a new update featuring superpowered weapons and fiery new outfits.

Epic Games took the game’s severs offline at 9am this morning (September 4), with matchmaking halted slightly beforehand.

The game became playable again at 10.47am after a brief downtime, which turned out to be much shorter than the five hours of disruption that the game’s leakers had predicted.

Fortnite update version 31.10 file size

Thankfully, the latest update (that also happens to be the first since the launch of the latest season, entitled Absolute Doom) comes in a much smaller package than its predecessors.

The update file size is 6.73 GB on PS5, 8GB on Xbox, 6GB on PC, and 7GB on Nintendo Switch.

As in the past, some players have noticed bloated file sizes on Xbox, but that may be down to a bug. Restarting your console should show you the correct version.

What’s new in Fortnite?

Oddly, Epic has yet to announce what new features have been added to the game (known as patch notes), though players have already sniffed out a few.

The developer also revealed that the new Dr Doom quests won’t be available until 2pm in the UK (9am ET).

One of the biggest additions to the game, the new missions offer rewards including a Doom skin, Fist of Doom Glider, the Doomblade Pickaxe, Doom’s Cloak Back Bling, and Doom-themed wrap and loading screen.

Before they arrive, you can apparently transform into Doom by interacting with a cauldron on the new Rift point of interest on the Fortnite Island.

Meanwhile, players have also spotted some new items including Shuri’s Black Panther Claws, a melee weapon that lets you dash and slash your opponents in a blaze of purple lightning. Magneto’s fireball-dealing mythic is also back to help you wreak havoc on other players.

As exciting as they sound, players may be a bit hesitant about the additions, especially if they turn out to be as powerful as some of the other recent weapons.

Late last month, Epic was forced to downgrade (or nerf) a bunch of the Marvel-themed items introduced in Chapter 5 Season 4, including Captain America’s Shield and War Machine’s Hover Jet and Arsenal.

As promised by Epic, the super style alternative skins for Marvel superheroes and supervillains have also been added to the game. These are available as bonus rewards for players who have already completed the latest Battle Pass.

They include the following 15 super styles:

  • Arcane Burn Emma Frost

  • Arcane Burn Shuri

  • Arcane Burn Captain Jones

  • Arcane Burn War Machine

  • Arcane Burn Gwenpool

  • Cold Sorcery Captain Jones

  • Cold Sorcery Gwenpool

  • Cold Sorcery Shuri

  • Cold Sorcery War Machine

  • Cold Sorcery Emma Frost

  • Doomforged War Machine

  • Doomforged Emma Frost

  • Doomforged Gwenpool

  • Doomforged Captain Jones

  • Doomforged Shuri

Other new skins reportedly coming to the game in the latest update include Black Cat (Marvel’s answer to DC’s Catwoman) and the catlike Sabretooth Meowscles.
