The original Avengers have assembled for a special new project honouring the Native American Lakota language.

On their YouTube channel, Marvel released a short video titled Assembling the Lakota. The video saw Mark Ruffalo (The Hulk), Robert Downey Jr (Iron Man), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) and Chris Evans (Captain America) reprising their roles to dub The Avengers in the once-banned Lakota language.

Initiated by Ruffalo, the project took over 15 months for 62 Lakota-Dakota language speakers and the Avengers team to rerecord the dialogue for the original blockbuster.

"This project came out of my relationship with the Lakota people and it was this fun thing that they wanted to do, where they wanted to take The Avengers – this crazy idea – let's do a Lakota dub of The Avengers," said Ruffalo.

He explained that work had been taking place to "revitalise the Lakota language" after Native Americans were banned from speaking it in the past.

The language consequently became underused and efforts are now being made by Native Americans at the Standing Rock Indian Reservation to bring it "back into the homes of our people".

Throughout the video, Johansson, Evans, Ruffalo and Downey Jr can be seen recording their scenes in the Lakota language. The actors paid special attention to the pronunciation and delivery of their lines.

"Just getting everyone together on the same page was probably the most difficult thing. But everyone really was into it," Ruffalo reflected. "It's a daunting language... But once you start to get them, it feels really good."

The Avengers stars were praised for their dedication to the task, as the Lakota contributors highlighted their respect for the language.

The newly dubbed The Avengers movie is streaming now on Disney+. "I think a really beautiful thing from the project is our language doesn't have to hide anymore," added one crew member.

All four Avengers movies are streaming on Disney+.
