Paul Rudd and Jack Black team up for reboot of '90s cult classic

Paul Rudd and Jack Black have teamed up for a reboot of '90s cult classic Anaconda.

The original thriller was released in 1997 and followed a National Geographic film crew that was taken hostage by an unhinged hunter, who forced them on a quest to capture the world's largest and deadliest snake.

Its cast notably included Jennifer Lopez, Jon Voight, Owen Wilson, Ice Cube, Eric Stoltz and Jonathan Hyde.

Anaconda was a surprise hit at the box office following its release, earning $145 million globally. The film's success later resulted in four sequels being released.

Now, Rudd and Black are in talks to star in a new take on the film, with a story that leans more toward comedy, according to Deadline.

The Sony Pictures film is reportedly focused on a group of friends who are facing mid-life crises and decide to remake their favourite movie from their youth. However, when they head into the jungle, things don't go to plan.

Details of Rudd and Black's roles are yet to be revealed, but two of the lead characters are described as a director moonlighting as a wedding videographer and an actor whose career peak was a stint on a cop show.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent writers Tom Gormican and Kevin Etten have penned the script, with Gormican also set to direct. Brad Fuller and Andrew Form are on board to produce.

The news comes after Rudd landed a role opposite Nick Jonas in an upcoming musical comedy from director John Carney.

Power Ballad tells the story of a wedding singer (Rudd), a rock star (Jonas) and the song that comes between them. The film is currently shooting in Dublin.

As for Black, the actor recently boarded the anticipated Minecraft movie. The adaptation of the hit game is being directed by Jared Hess for Warner Bros, Vertigo and Legendary Pictures, and will be released in April 2025.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom's Jason Momoa, Peacemaker's Danielle Brooks and Wednesday's Emma Myers are also in the cast.

Anaconda doesn't have a release date yet.
