Strictly Come Dancing's Tom Dean has admitted to getting a "slap on the wrist" after confirming his upcoming appearance on the competition show before the 2024 line-up was officially announced.

After helping Team GB retain the 4x200m freestyle title at the Paris Olympics last month, the swimmer accidentally let slip his Strictly involvement during a post-race interview.

"I'd literally got the call one minute before racing an Olympic final, so that was kind of what was going through my mind," Dean recalled, as reported by Radio Times.

"And then, I got fired that Strictly question," he added. "So, I wasn't really 100 per cent [or] dialled in on what I should be saying, and then a little slip of the tongue."

However, Dean said he wasn't scrutinised too harshly by show bosses and just got "[a] little slap on the wrist" for letting the news slip early.

As for how he's finding Strictly training before he officially takes to the dancefloor when the 2024 series kicks off next week, the Olympic champion said: "It's much more fun. The Olympics, it's very serious, but this is a big team effort at the moment."

"It's enjoyable and also you're working with your pro, but you're also dancing with them," he continued. "My coach doesn't dive in and swim with me so [it's] a little bit different."

Other celebrities taking part in Strictly 2024, which begins on Saturday (September 14) with its launch night, include EastEnders star Jamie Borthwick, Love Island's Tasha Ghouri, TOWIE's Pete Wicks and former Coronation Street star Shayne Ward.

Strictly Come Dancing will return on Saturday, September 14 on BBC One, while spin-off Strictly: It Takes Two airs on weeknights on BBC Two. Both shows are available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
