New Zealand vs Uruguay - LIVE!

Leicester Fainga’anuku scored a hat-trick as New Zealand hammered Uruguay 73-0 to book their place in the quarter-finals of the Rugby World Cup. The All Blacks went into their final Pool A match knowing a bonus-point win would see them through to the last-eight, and they had the four tries required inside the first-half despite a relatively sluggish start by their lofty standards.

Uruguay kept New Zealand at bay for the opening 20 minutes, threatening to find the first try themselves, but the sensational Damian McKenzie broke the deadlock and from there it became a procession. Richie Mo’unga and Will Jordan quickly followed McKenzie in going over, before scrum-half Cam Roigard secured the bonus point before the break.

Seven more tries followed in the second-half, three of them for Leicester Fainga’anuku, as the All Blacks strolled into the knockout stages, where Ireland are the most likely opponents in a blockbuster quarter-final encounter.

Job done

22:04 , Matt Verri

So, New Zealand safely through to the quarter-finals as expected.

Now the serious business begins. And it gets very serious very quickly, with Ireland likely waiting in the last-eight.

That would be some match!

Pick of the bunch?

Uruguay try to run it from their own half with the final play of the match, knocked on though and that will be that in Lyon.

Job done for New Zealand, they have cruised into the quarter-finals with another battering.

Uruguay kept it tight for 20 minutes - a bit of a bloodbath after that.

New Zealand 73-0 Uruguay

21:47 , Matt Verri

79 mins: For once something doesn’t come off!

Barrett with a lovely burst, tries to bend a kick off the outside of his boot into the path of McKenzie... doesn’t pull it off. That would have been very special.

TRY! New Zealand 71-0 Uruguay

21:45 , Matt Verri

77 mins: Still time for a couple more tries...

Swiftly back to the Uruguay 22, where the All Blacks have been camped all half. Blackadder breaks through the tackle, tries to pop it up to Clarke but the ball goes loose.

New Zealand still have it though and they’re over again! Faingaanuku has his hat-trick.

TRY! New Zealand 64-0 Uruguay

21:42 , Matt Verri

73 mins: Not the prettiest try from the All Blacks, but they won’t care!

Williams powers over from a couple of yards out, Uruguay can’t keep him out. New Zealand continue this relentless dominance.

New Zealand 59-0 Uruguay

21:39 , Matt Verri

71 mins: Two brilliant conversions from McKenzie since he took over kicking duties. He’s had some night.

Here come the All Blacks again, Jordan with the kick into space and Uruguay need a kind bounce here... get it. Berchesi has to ground it under huge pressure, that’s all he could do.

5m scrum.

TRY! New Zealand 57-0 Uruguay

21:36 , Matt Verri

We’re going to have a hat-trick battle in the closing stages of this match.

McKenzie and Jordan both have two tries tonight... Fainga’anuku has joined them. Lienert-Brown creates the space, times the pass perfectly and the winger has an easy job out wide.

New Zealand 52-0 Uruguay

21:34 , Matt Verri

66 mins: McKenzie now on kicking duties, with Mo’unga off the pitch.

And that’s a really confident start, tough angle wide on the touchline but that’s perfect to add the extra two points.

TRY! New Zealand 50-0 Uruguay

21:33 , Matt Verri

65 mins: The All Blacks win yet another penalty in the Uruguay 22, bang in the middle of the pitch. They opt for the scrum.

Ball comes out this time, Uruguay not penalised... by the referee at least!

The All Blacks do punish them, simple as you like. Worked wide, Jordan with the simplest of finishes. Brilliant from Barrett and McKenzie in the build-up.

New Zealand 45-0 Uruguay

21:28 , Matt Verri

62 mins: That felt fairly inevitable. Penalty New Zealand, Uruguay collapse the scrum and Wayne Barnes warns that it will be a yellow card the next time that happens.

Couple of changes for the All Blacks - Scott Barrett on for Whitelock, with Beauden Barrett replacing Mo’unga.

New Zealand 45-0 Uruguay

21:26 , Matt Verri

60 mins: Uruguay have at least managed to slow down the scoring in the last five minutes or so. Badly needed.

They have a scrum in their own 22, All Blacks will be piling the pressure on from this.

New Zealand 45-0 Uruguay

21:22 , Matt Verri

58 mins: Chaotic couple of minutes, handling errors from both sides as the space opens up. No structure at all.

Play is paused as Uruguay are awarded a penalty - Freitas down holding his face after Vaai clatters into him. Painful one, no head contact but it is obstruction. Just a penalty.

New Zealand 45-0 Uruguay

21:19 , Matt Verri

55 mins: Mo’unga adds the extras. A question of how many New Zealand want now.

Still more than 25 minutes to go - going to feel like a lot more than that for Uruguay!

TRY! New Zealand 43-0 Uruguay

21:16 , Matt Verri

53 mins: This could get very ugly now.

Relentless pressure, just a matter of time and McKenzie has his second try of the night. Had Jordan free on his right shoulder, but he was never going to be passing from there.

New Zealand 38-0 Uruguay

21:15 , Matt Verri

51 mins: Uruguay scrum - imagine they’ll want to get this out as quickly as possible.

Can’t even do that though, All Blacks pack is just so dominant and here come New Zealand again. Fainga’anuku swivels his way into the 22, Uruguay unable to slow things down at all.

TRY! New Zealand 36-0 Uruguay

21:12 , Matt Verri

48 mins: McKenzie has been absolutely electric tonight. Another great line, Uruguay do well to slow things down.

All Blacks still firmly on the attack though, Jordan flings a wonderful pass out wide and Faingaanuku can stroll over out wide.

New Zealand 31-0 Uruguay

21:10 , Matt Verri

47 mins: Kicking hasn’t been great from Mo’unga tonight.

Missed one conversion in the first-half and this one isn’t his best either, smacking back off the post.

TRY! New Zealand 31-0 Uruguay

21:08 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Back to the corner we go, as the All Blacks win another penalty.

Faingaanuku is stopped a couple of metres short, but New Zealand don’t have to wait long. Newell with some really nice footwork as he forces his way over from close range.

New Zealand 26-0 Uruguay

21:06 , Matt Verri

43 mins: New Zealand straight on the front-foot, penalty won and the kick takes them into the Uruguay 22.

The South American side turn it over though and they can clear the danger - although they’ve then lost the lineout and handed the ball straight back.

Back underway!

21:03 , Matt Verri

Up and running again in Lyon!

Cane front and centre on his return

21:01 , Matt Verri

20:57 , Matt Verri

Uruguay yet to get on the board, but that doesn’t really tell the full story of the first-half.

They had two or three big moments in that opening 20 minutes, with the TMO ruling out a try by a matter of inches.

This match is done - would be nice to see Uruguay get a moment to remember with a second-half try.

Apologies to all New Zealand fans who very much do not agree with that...

Outrageous!

20:51 , Matt Verri

HT: New Zealand 26-0 Uruguay

20:48 , Matt Verri

Clock goes red, Uruguay looking to run the ball from their own half. Can they finish the opening 40 minutes on a high?

No. Knocked on in the tackle and that will be half-time.

Uruguay so impressive for about 19 minutes, but the All Blacks have shown their class since. Cruising into the quarter-finals as it stands.

TRY! New Zealand 26-0 Uruguay

20:46 , Matt Verri

Too good from Roigard!

Stunning step, Uruguay have no answer to that and he can dive over to secure the bonus point for the All Blacks.

Been a masterclass in the last 20 minutes or so, haven’t got more than about 30 seconds without a brilliant piece of skill.

New Zealand 21-0 Uruguay

20:44 , Matt Verri

37 mins: Another All Blacks scrum, another penalty advantage. Uruguay can’t cope.

Ball is flung wide, Jordan with a wonderful one-handed pick-up, outrageously good. Flicks the kick into the space, Arata is there to mop up the danger with Jordan sensing another try.

Can only touch it down though, New Zealand scrum from 5m coming up.

TRY! New Zealand 21-0 Uruguay

20:41 , Matt Verri

WHAT HAVE WE JUST SEEN?!

WOW. McKenzie with the grubber kick, chases it himself and gets there... somehow scoops it back infield about an inch from the touchline, where Jordan claims and strolls over.

That was ridiculous from McKenzie. Literally had an inch to play with as he scooped that to Jordan at full pace.

New Zealand 14-0 Uruguay

20:39 , Matt Verri

33 mins: Straight out for Uruguay... lost it.

They had the platform to attack there, but the ball is knocked on and the chance goes. So frustrating, Uruguay could easily have got themselves on the scoreboard tonight. Been close two or three times.

New Zealand 14-0 Uruguay

20:38 , Matt Verri

31 mins: Uruguay look to have flung it straight into touch, but it did take a slight flick off a New Zealand player.

Was a knock-on too, so scrum for Uruguay deep in the All Blacks 22. Out on the wing, only really one place to go from there.

That’s another knock-on, off Roigard’s outstretched arm. Back to the scrum we go - this has slowed things right down.

New Zealand 14-0 Uruguay

20:35 , Matt Verri

28 mins: Chance for Uruguay, as they win the penalty and kick to touch. Lineout 5m out. Maul doesn’t make much progress, so the ball comes out. They win another penalty, offside.

What to do? Back to the corner they go. Big roar from the crowd, they approve of that decision.

New Zealand 14-0 Uruguay

20:33 , Matt Verri

Mo’unga getting good practice from that spot.

Converts his own try, the All Blacks are halfway to a bonus point and this could be a long 14 minutes until half-time now for Uruguay.

TRY! New Zealand 12-0 Uruguay

20:32 , Matt Verri

And there’s the second try!

Penalty advantage for the All Blacks, they are dominating the scrum.

Mo’unga has McKenzie and Jordan on his shoulder, doesn’t need them though as he spots the space and he’s too quick from there.

New Zealand 7-0 Uruguay

20:30 , Matt Verri

23 mins: That’s... a disaster.

Etcheverry spills the ball forward on his own 5m line under no pressure - scrum New Zealand and this is basically from the exact place they just scored their opening try.

New Zealand 7-0 Uruguay

20:28 , Matt Verri

Mo’unga adds the extras, kick sails through the posts.

Right - will that see the All Blacks really kick into gear now? Uruguay deserve to make it to half-time still vaguely in touch.

TRY! New Zealand 5-0 Uruguay

20:27 , Matt Verri

20 mins: Advantage New Zealand as the scrum collapses.

They don’t need it - McKenzie bulldozes his way over! This one will count, Uruguay unable to halt the full-back as he falls over the line.

Finally the All Blacks are up and running.

New Zealand 0-0 Uruguay

20:25 , Matt Verri

18 mins: Surely this time, as Roigard gets the All Blacks to within three metres of the try-line.

It will be a penalty for New Zealand - they’ve opted for the scrum on the 5m line. Right under the posts, perfect position.

New Zealand 0-0 Uruguay

20:23 , Matt Verri

17 mins: New Zealand have the opening try, at last... or maybe not?

McKenzie strolls over for the All Blacks, but the TMO is speaking to Wayne Barnes again. We’re going to have another review.

No try again! Mo’unga with the neck grab this time, Uruguay again let off the hook.

20:21 , Matt Verri

16 mins: This is a remarkable effort from Uruguay so far - how long can they keep it up for? Relentless pace to the game, no structure at all. A lot of fun.

Uruguay could very easily be in front after 15 minutes, we weren’t expecting to say that!

New Zealand 0-0 Uruguay

20:19 , Matt Verri

13 mins: INCHES AWAY!

Nearly lift-off in Lyon, as Uruguay think they have gone over in the corner.

Ardao it is, as Uruguay work the numbers... but his trailing boot is in touch as he goes over. Devastating. TMO has ruined the party.

All came from a glorious break from Mieres, who nearly went all the way himself.

New Zealand 0-0 Uruguay

20:16 , Matt Verri

11 mins: Jacobson eventually brought down, but he’s got the All Blacks up towards the 22.

Loose pass though, and they’re forced to back-peddle towards the halfway line. Bit of a loose display this so far from New Zealand.

And now they’ve lost the ball forwards, Uruguay have it back.

NO TRY! New Zealand 0-0 Uruguay

20:14 , Matt Verri

It is indeed a knock-on!

Roigard spills it as he dives over, didn’t have control as he touches the ball down. Uruguay survive.

Lomox is off for the All Blacks, Newall on to replace him.

TRY! New Zealand 5-0 Uruguay

20:13 , Matt Verri

8 mins: Trouble here for Uruguay, the All Blacks have numbers wide and it comes to Faingaanuku, who bundles his way through the tackles... just brought down before the line.

Only delaying the inevitable though, Roigard seeing the space and diving over out wide.

TMO having a look at a possible knock-on though...

New Zealand 0-0 Uruguay

20:10 , Matt Verri

6 mins: Another turnover in the New Zealand 22, the All Blacks look to run it from deep.

They’re doing just that, Jordan skips all the way into the Uruguay 22, has to take the contact though with none of his team-mates able to keep up with him.

But the TMO gets involved, penalty Uruguay. Neck grab from Jacobson and the All Blacks’ momentum goes.

New Zealand 0-0 Uruguay

20:07 , Matt Verri

4 mins: Lomax having his right knee strapped, not an ideal opeing few minutes for him.

Clock is paused, with Uruguay waiting to have the put-in at the scrum. They’ll be very satisfied with how it’s gone so far.

Just the 76 minutes to go...

New Zealand 0-0 Uruguay

20:04 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Well this is a nice start for Uruguay.

Claim the lineout and work the phases, into double figures as they edge their way into the New Zealand 22. Great line from Inciarte, he spills it in the tackle though and the All Blacks boot the ball up the pitch.

KICK-OFF!

20:01 , Matt Verri

We’re underway!

19:57 , Matt Verri

Anthems done - great atmosphere in Lyon, plenty of Uruguayan shirts dotted around the stadium.

Time for the haka and then we’ll be ready to get up and running!

19:53 , Matt Verri

“It’s quite obvious that New Zealand are going to win,” says pundit Jim Hamilton.

Not wrong, even if that doesn’t exactly build excitement ahead of the action getting underway...

Sam Whitelock runs out onto the pitch by himself ahead of his team-mates, as he makes his 150th appearance.

Man of many hours...

19:47 , Matt Verri

Not long now...

19:43 , Matt Verri

Just under 20 minutes to go until we get up and running in Lyon.

Been a tournament with plenty of big wins so far, New Zealand responsible for two of them as they dismantled Namibia and Italy.

Can Uruguay do themselves justice and push the All Blacks a bit? We’ll find out very soon.

Relaxed mood in the Uruguay camp!

Elsewhere at the World Cup...

19:22 , Matt Verri

Jack Willis has been ruled out of England’s Rugby World Cup campaign due to a neck injury.

The Toulouse flanker suffered the blow in England’s 71-0 win over Chile in Lille on Saturday, September 23.

England tried to rehab Willis in the hope of keeping the former Wasps flanker out in France, but the Red Rose medics had to admit defeat on Wednesday night.

England will call up a replacement, yet to be decided, with the new man expected to arrive by the start of next week.

What’s next?

19:03 , Matt Verri

Let’s assume New Zealand do get the job done tonight, securing the bonus-point win they need to seal their place in the quarter-finals.

Their ‘reward’ is likely to be a last-eight clash with Ireland, the number-one ranked side in the world. That does depend on this weekend’s clash between Ireland and Scotland though, with South Africa also a possible opponent for the All Blacks.

Basically... it’s going to be difficult!

Whitelock keeps breaking records!

Sam Whitelock making his 23rd appearance at a Rugby World Cup tonight.

He was level with fellow All Black Richie McKaw and England’s Jason Leonard, but will move out in front at the top of the list.

Just the 150 Tests for Whitelock now - Alun Wyn Jones on 170 the only man ahead of him when it comes to international caps.

Cane: All Blacks in a good place

18:33 , Matt Verri

Sam Cane is relieved to have finally put a back injury behind him as he makes his first start of the World Cup.

The All Blacks captain came off the bench against Italy, a performance he believes showed the progress New Zealand have made since the start of the tournament.

Cane said: “I am very ready. I am very excited. It’s been a little bit of a road bump for me personally, this start of the World Cup.

“The squad, as a whole, is in good shape physically. I feel like we’ve made good progress in some key areas of our game following the Bordeaux week [off] when we got to put in a lot of work and it was pleasing to see those shine through in the game against Italy.

“The challenge for us is to back that up and keep strengthening those key areas and put out another good performance which could put us in a good spot going forwards.”

All Blacks in ominous form

18:25 , Matt Verri

It was fairly brutal stuff from New Zealand last time out.

Italy were expected to at least keep it vaguely competitive, but the All Blacks put 96 points past them in an absolutely relentless showing.

Not sure the Uruguay players will have been keen to watch the highlights from that match, but you can!

Arriving in style!

18:17 , Matt Verri

Hope not lost for Uruguay... sort of

18:05 , Matt Verri

New Zealand need a bonus-point win to secure their place in the quarter-finals, but what about Uruguay?

Yes, they are not yet out of the World Cup. Their task is a simple one - they need to beat New Zealand by at least 80 points tonight and then hope Italy do not pick up any points against France.

If the first part of that equation happens, we’re about to have probably the greatest night in any sport ever.

Wouldn’t hold your breath.

Standard Sport prediction

18:00 , Matt Verri

The All Blacks romped past Italy in a clear statement of intent and, despite the changes, name a side more than strong enough to complete the job and qualify for the quarter-finals on what should be a comfortable night.

Whether Uruguay have one last battling performance in them remains to be seen, but New Zealand can be expected to rack up another big score.

New Zealand to win by 50+ points.

Uruguay team news

17:53 , Matt Verri

Uruguay make seven changes from their side that beat Namibia, going back to a lot of the players that battled hard against France and Italy.

A second-string French side were given a major scare earlier in the tournament by Uruguay, who will be hoping for more of the same tonight.
