Ohio State lost a commitment from its recruiting class for 2025 on Saturday night.

Jontae Gilbert, a five-star safety from Atlanta, decommitted in the aftermath of visits to Georgia Tech and South Carolina in recent days.

Gilbert became the first member of the Buckeyes’ 2025 class when he gave a verbal pledge last July.

The major recruiting services all regard him as one of the top safeties in his class. The composite rankings from 247Sports have him as the second-ranked safety.

In a statement given to On3, Gilbert said it was a “very hard decision” to reopen his recruitment.

“Respect my decision!” he added. “Thank you Buckeye Nation for everything and to all the Ohio State coaching staff.”

Tavien St. Clair, a four-star quarterback from Bellefontaine, is the only remaining commitment in Ohio State’s 2025 class.
