The U.S. men's basketball team is through to the semifinals. Now it's the women's turn in elimination play.
The U.S. women are in quarterfinal action on Tuesday as they seek their 58th straight Olympic win and eighth straight Olympic gold medal.
Track and field will feature more high-stakes competition including the 400-meter men's final, women's pole vault and Noah Lyles back on the track after securing 100-meter gold. Nelly Korda will start her quest for a second straight golfing gold medal, and U.S. men face volleyball elimination in the gym and at the beach.
Here's what we're looking forward to most on Wednesday in Paris:
Women's basketball: USA vs. Nigeria in quarterfinals (3:30 p.m. ET, USA)
A day after the U.S. men dominated Brazil to clinch a spot in the semifinals, the U.S. women will have their turn to attempt to advance. A full slate of quarterfinal action starts with Serbia vs. Australia (5 a.m. ET) and concludes with USA vs. Nigeria to narrow the field down to the final four.
The U.S. women cruised through group play, beating Japan, Belgium and Germany by an average of 19.3 points. They've now won 58 consecutive Olympic matchups dating back to the 1996 Atlanta Games. They stand three wins away from an eighth straight gold medal and enter elimination play as the No. 1 seed. Nigeria advanced to the quarterfinals as the first men's or women's basketball team from Africa to ever advance to the Olympic knockout stage.
Track and field: Men's 400-meters highlights 4 medal events (medal coverage starts at 1 p.m. ET, NBC)
Tuesday brings another busy day on the track with four rounds of medals to be claimed. The women's pole vault final kicks off the medal events at 1 p.m. ET. American Katie Moon and Australian rival Nina Kennedy — who shared the 2023 World Championship — are expected to battle for the gold medal. Men's discus throwers will settle a champion in a final starting at 2:25 p.m.
Americans Quincy Hall and Michael Norman are expected to contend in the men's 400-meter final (3:20), one of the premier track events of the Games. The day on the track will conclude with the 3,000-meter men's steeplechase. Noah Lyles, 100-meter U.S. gold medalist, will return to the track in 200-meter semifinals (2:02 p.m.).
Women's golf: Nelly Korda goes for repeat gold (3 a.m. ET, Golf Channel)
Nelly Korda's back for more gold in the midst of her best season as a pro. The 26-year-old and Tokyo gold medalist has six wins on Tour this season, including a historic five-tournament win streak that's tied for the longest in LPGA history. One of those wins was in a major, the Chevron Championship.
Korda won in Tokyo at 23 years old and is that much more formidable three years later. She'll look to join Scottie Scheffler for a U.S. gold-medal sweep in Paris. Round 1 gets underway early Wednesday.
Men's volleyball semis: USA vs. Poland (10 a.m. ET, NBC)
USA volleyball will look to secure a medal in the semifinal of the men's tournament against Poland. A three-time gold medalist (1984, 1988, 2008), USA is seeking its first medal of any color in the event since Beijing in 2008. The winner of Tuesday's match is guaranteed silver at worst.
Italy and France will face off (2 p.m. ET, E!, streaming) in the day's other semifinal with the winners of each match set to face off for the gold medal. Wednesday's losers will play for bronze.
Beach volleyball semis: U.S. men take on Qatar (2 p.m. ET, streaming/check local listings)
One U.S. team out of four remains in beach volleyball. Sara Hughes and Kelly Cheng lost in the quarterfinals Tuesday, joining fellow American teams of Chase Budinger/Miles Evans and Kristen Nuss/Taryn Kloth in falling short of medal competition.
Only Miles Partain and Andy Benesh remain. They'll take on the Qatari duo of Ahmed Tijan and Cherif Younousse in the quarterfinal round on Wednesday in the last of four matches on the day.
