Denmark vs England - LIVE!

England missed out on the chance to seal top spot in Group C with a match to spare as they drew 1-1 with Denmark in Frankfurt. It was a familiar story from Gareth Southgate’s side, who do still sit top of the group with four points from their opening two games. They took an early lead as Harry Kane turned home from close range, but then sat back and allowed their opponents to take charge.

Denmark increasingly pinned England back, enjoying real success against a struggling midfield, and they levelled it up before the break, when Morten Hjulmand fired a brilliant effort in off the post from 25 yards out. England improved slightly in the second-half, but not enough to stop Southgate bringing off Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka and Phil Foden, who had hit the post from the edge of the area, with 20 minutes remaining.

Ollie Watkins was one of those introduced and had a swift impact, making a sharp run in behind as his effort from Kasper Schmeichel was smothered, but the sloppiness continued from England. They were repeatedly caught on the ball, with Marc Guehi forced into a last-ditch challenge after losing it himself, before Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg whipped an effort just wide as England again played themselves into trouble. They now have work to do against Slovenia in their final group-stage match.

Gareth Southgate was never likely to abandon his experiment with Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield after one game, particularly a win, but how about two?

Does the manager now have a big enough sample size to rethink after an alarmingly loose England performance in a 1-1 with Denmark here in Frankfurt?

In a ragged and all-too-familiar display, Southgate’s side were out-passed by Denmark, who deservedly fought back from Harry Kane’s 64th goal in an England shirt to equalise through Mortem Hjulmand’s screamer before the interval.

"I want him to do the things he's really good at,” the England boss says.

“The range of passes he has, the ability to unlock defences, I think he did a lot well on Sunday and if he can add that final moment he can cause Denmark a lot of problems."

On Trippier continuing, Southgate adds: “[He] did an incredible job, huge part of us keeping a clean sheet. He's a good footballer and has to adapt but he's done that well for us in the past."

Jude Bellingham was sensational in the first-half of England’s win over Serbia, but Gareth Southgate has suggested the midfielder could pace himself a bit better.

“I think he definitely got 90 minutes of running ­into 45,” the England boss said.

“I think the occasion, the emotion, scoring - I mean he had a phenomenal impact on the game and the great thing is that he is really coachable.

“We can sit and chat and talk things through. We’ve got to get the right ­balance of not losing what he’s already bringing.

And also, can we sow one or two things — as with all the players, really — that we can refine and get even more [from him]?”

If there is a concern for Gareth Southgate after the first round of matches at Euro 2024, it might be a tediously familiar one.

Watching Germany metronome Toni Kroos, Spain pair Rodri and Pedri and France’s N’Golo Kante continue to run games, it remains easy to wonder if England will struggle for midfield control at the business end of the tournament, particularly after their patchy second half against Serbia.

Southgate has acknowledged that England do not have a player such as Kroos or Croatia’s Luka Modric, able “to control the rhythm of a game”, and the manager is instead playing to his squad’s strengths by building a team full of energy, vision and explosive power, with Trent Alexander-Arnold continuing next to Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham against Denmark.

Like Serbia, the Danes are set to use a back-five out of possession and Southgate believes Alexander-Arnold can unlock packed defences.

“He’s less likely to be a player who dictates tempo,” the manager said. “What I do see is that range of passing and that ability to open up a defence that might be blocking spaces, defending low.”
