Texas Foster Mom Cleverly Rounds Up Scared Dachshund Found Curled Up in Front of Walgreens

Sadly, it's not uncommon to see a stray dog these days, especially if you know where to look. Many strays were born on the streets and are living the only kind of life they know, and they often aren't rescued until they're injured, ill, or until there are extra resources available in the area. Sometimes, though, it's easy to tell when a dog isn't capable of thriving as a stray until help can come. During tough times like this, it's up to dog rescuers and good samaritans to lend a helping hand.

The experienced dog foster who goes by @streetheartstx recently lent a helping hand in a situation exactly like this on July 14. She learned about a scared little Dachshund who was found curled up in front of a Walgreens, and she was determined to help. Fortunately, that' exactly what she did!

Thank you for rescuing little Reese's! This tiny dog seemed so scared to be out by himself in a busy parking lot, and it's no wonder why he was too frightened to get close to people. Who knows what happened leading up to this encounter? This Dachshund dog could've been dumped or even mistreated by people, but what's most important is that he's safe and sound now.

"Such a cutie!" gushed commenter @misstinkerbell111. "You don't normally see dogs like that on the street." You're so right! Dachshunds are popular pets and are rarely in animal shelters or rescues, let alone on the street. That's why everyone knew something was up from the moment they saw the stray dog!

Signs of a Stray Dog

Plenty of commenters assume that this dapple Dachshund belongs to a very worried owner--and they could be right--but the detail they honed in on may not be a clue to his past. While it makes sense that trimmed nails would be a sign of a well-loved pet dog, the experienced rescuer explained why it could actually indicate the opposite:

"Not saying he doesn’t have a home," she began, "but street dogs actually have some of the best nails. The concrete keeps them nice and short. It’s the owner surrenders that have talons." That makes sense!

Rescuers like this selfless woman can look for details like a collar or microchip to determine whether a dog has an owner. Posting on social media or around the neighborhood can be helpful, too, though one has to be careful with a dog from such a popular breed. Ask for proof of ownership, like pictures and vet records, to ensure you're not handing over the found dog to someone with bad intentions!

This Texas foster mom will take good care of Reeses Pieces until a more solid plan is formed. Hopefully, he'll be relaxing at home sooner rather than later!
